Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects over 70 million people worldwide. Despite the availability of over 20 anti-seizure medications (ASMs) for the symptomatic treatment of seizures, about one-third of patients remain refractory to treatment [1]. Patients with such drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) have increased risks of premature death, injuries, psychosocial dysfunction and a reduced Quality of Life (QoL), also affecting the caregivers [1]. Equally, these patients facet systemic and neurological adverse events (AEs) associated with polypharmacotherapy. ASMs can cause dose-related AEs, such as drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, blurry vision, incoordination, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms such as constipation or nausea [2;3]. These events are often manageable by lowering the dosage, reducing the number of concomitant drugs, or switching to a better-tolerated ASMs. However, ASMs can also trigger idiosyncratic AEs, including serious cutaneous, hematological, and hepatic reactions, which are more prevalent in children, and typically require the prompt discontinuation of the responsible drug [2]. AEs can affect the physical and mental spheres of patients/caregivers and are not always adequately treated, either because of difficulties in reporting them to the correct specialist or for the fear to incur in polypharmacotherapy; consequently, the management of AEs in DRE represents an unmet medical need. The quest for treatments that contain the incidence of such side effects may result in excessive polypharmacology, which should be avoided especially in children. In this context, the use of food supplements that, without interfering with the pharmacological treatment established by the specialist, could helps the patient to increase compliance with the therapy itself, attenuates comorbidities and in turn improves patients’ QoL.
The intake of natural extract-based compounds has shown promising results in helping to counteract comorbidities (i.e., cognitive deficits or behavioral abnormalities), but they have to be specifically and harmonically combined to exploit synergistic effects.
Cor.Con. International rationally developed Epilamba Junior, a specific and harmonic formula to deal with comorbidities associated to adverse events in antiepileptic drug therapy.

Millions of children around the world face the daily challenges of epilepsy. While existing medications can control seizures, they often come with a heavy burden – comorbidities, related intrinsically to the disease or to the use of drugs – These comorbidities can significantly impact a child’s life, making it difficult to learn, play, and socialise. Imagine a child battling epilepsy, but also facing a different kind of fight – disease’s comorbidities and drugs side effects. The most common ones encountered in the epileptic subjects are: (i) memory deficit; (ii) loss or attenuation of sense of self-worth; (iii) sense of fatigue and exhaustion; (iv) reduced mood; (v) sleep disorders; and (vi) gastrointestinal disorders. The quest for treatments that contain the incidence of such comorbidities may result in excessive polypharmacology, which should be avoided especially in children. In this context, there is a definite need for supplementation that, without interfering with the pharmacological treatment established by the specialist, helps the patient to increase compliance with the therapy itself, attenuates comorbidities and in turn improves patients’ quality of life.
Epilamba Junior was rationally formulated and clinically tested with the help of experts to address the medical unmet needs to manage comorbidities in anti-epileptic drug therapy. Epilamba shows promise as a supportive treatment for managing comorbidities and side effects in paediatric patients with epilepsy, potentially improving their quality of life without impacting seizure management. It finds its main application in the patient undergoing specialist treatment for epilepsy and absence and could offer the specialist a useful tool in counteracting some of the most common comorbidities and side effects observed in epileptic subjects. With its well-rounded formulation and promising clinical outcomes, emerges as an innovative approach, offering a complementary, natural adjunct to traditional drug regimens.
