Epilepsy is a neurological disorder affecting over 70 million people worldwide. Despite the availability of more than 20 anti-seizure medications (ASMs) for treating seizures, approximately one-third of patients do not respond to treatment, a condition known as drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) [1]. These patients face higher risks of premature death, injuries, psychosocial challenges, and a significantly reduced quality of life (QoL), which also affects their caregivers[1]. Additionally, they often experience systemic and neurological adverse events (AEs) linked to polypharmacotherapy.
Common dose-related AEs from ASMs, such as drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, blurry vision, incoordination, and gastrointestinal issues (GI) like constipation and nausea[2;3], can sometimes be managed by adjusting the dosage, reducing the number of medications, or switching to a better-tolerated ASM. However, ASMs can also trigger severe idiosyncratic AEs, including skin, blood, and liver reactions, which are common and may require immediate drug discontinuation[2].
AEs can significantly impact the physical and mental well-being of both patients and caregivers. However, these side effects are not always effectively managed due to underreporting or concerns about increasing the medication burden. Managing AEs in DRE remains an unmet medical need. In this context, food supplements that support therapy adherence, help reduce comorbidities and improve patient QoL without interfering with the prescribed pharmacological treatment could provide valuable support.
The intake of natural extract-based compounds has shown promising results in helping to counteract comorbidities (i.e., cognitive deficits or behavioural abnormalities), but they have to be specifically and harmonically combined to exploit synergistic effects.
Cor.Con. International rationally developed Epilamba, a specific and harmonic formula to deal with comorbidities associated to adverse events in antiepileptic drug therapy.

Thanks to its content in specific ingredients (Bacopa monnieri, Eleutherococcus senticosus and Griffonia simplicifolia) it has beneficial effects on cognitive and mood functions, reducing both systemic toxicity and neurotoxicity. Millions of adults worldwide face the daily challenges of living with epilepsy. While existing medications can help control seizures, they often come with a significant burden – comorbidities linked to both the disease and the drugs used for treatment. These comorbidities can have a profound impact on an adult’s life, affecting their ability to work, socialize, maintain emotional well-being and enjoy daily activities.
Living with epilepsy often means managing more than just seizures. Adults with epilepsy often face a dual struggle: managing seizures while also dealing with the side effects of treatment and the disease itself. (i) Memory deficits, (ii) reduced sense of self-worth, (iii) fatigue and exhaustion, (iv)low mood, (v)sleep disturbances, and (vi) gastrointestinal issues are among the most common problems encountered. Managing these comorbidities can lead to excessive polypharmacology, which should be avoided, particularly in adults with complex treatment regimens. This underscores the need for supportive solutions that work alongside prescribed treatments without interfering with them.
In this context, targeted supplementation offers a promising approach. When integrated into a specialist’s treatment plan, it can help improve therapy compliance, reduce the impact of comorbidities, and enhance the patient’s overall quality of life.
Epilamba was rationally formulated and clinically tested with the help of experts to address the medical unmet needs to manage comorbidities in anti-epileptic drug therapy. Epilamba shows promise as a supportive treatment for managing comorbidities and side effects in patients with epilepsy, potentially improving their quality of life without impacting seizure management. It finds its main application in the patient undergoing specialist treatment for epilepsy and absence and could offer the specialist a useful tool in counteracting some of the most common comorbidities and side effects observed in epileptic subjects. With its well-rounded formulation and promising clinical outcomes, emerges as an innovative approach, offering a complementary, natural adjunct to traditional drug regimens.
